Fur Sustained

from Possum Boy by The Henry Nelson Ensemble

/

lyrics

Today I felt a glacier in my mind
Turning loose my fictions fossilized
I helped there fragile fur up from the ice
And watched their fumes defuse into the night

You’ve draws your book of bargains in my arms
You’ve calmed my storming brows with placid palms
You stripped my of the gauze that gripped my skin
And fixed my burns with supple leaves of tin

-()-
You
Couldn’t know
Your pausless grace
With your eyes so closed
In my fictions of blame

My stomach sneers low
You draw on its frame
Integrate my stretchmarks
With drafts of your name
-()-

Today I watched a stuntman slit his throat
Addressing my attention as we spoke
He asked my if I felt my tax was fair
As he combed the scarlet droplets from his hair

Today I found a fletching for my brain
Painted feathers frozen to their lanes
You’ve dug me out from hides and inner grains
And washed my feathers from their slouching stains.

-()-
I found the moon
and its cult of mourning shrooms
kneeling in their garbs
by the bass of my tomb

its not where I sleep
but I’ll go there sometimes
to admire the glaze
of my taxidermized eyes

I hear you sneeze
From somewhere inside
Stuffed with the plastic
proposing my hide

I’m glad
You could see
What’s been built of me
My fur sustained
By its falsity
